NOORDERLICHT INTERNATIONAL PHOTOFESTIVAL
Behind Walls - Eastern Europe before 1989
Main exhibition
Fries Museum, Leeuwarden, the Netherlands
September 7 - October 26, 2008
Opening September 6th (invitation only)
In 1989 the fall of the Berlin Wall heralded the end of the East Block. Socialism and totalitarianism made way for capitalism and democracy. A unique reservoir of photography was buried along with the old values. Over the years, each of the member states of the East Block had developed its own photographic vocabulary, which almost never extended beyond its national borders. Now that memories of the Communist era are no longer welcome, this historically important body of photography faces the threat of remaining unseen forever.
Two decades after the end of the East Block, Noorderlicht unlocks this forgotten treasure. In service of the regime, independently or working underground, photographers in the East Block documented a now vanished era, each in their own way. Behind Walls, the 15th Noorderlicht Photofestival, offers an overview of their work, which is generally being seen here for the first time outside its country of origin. Never before has photography from all the former East Block lands been brought together in one large-scale presentation.
Beyond Walls - Eastern Europe after 1989
Ancillary exhibition
Location: Fries Museum
Together with Behind Walls, Beyond Walls forms a full-fledged diptych. In an extraordinary presentation, 35 photographers from East and West visualize the most recent history of Eastern Europe, with work from all the former East Block countries. Beyond Walls tells the intriguing story of a world full of contradictions in which a dynamic present still bears the traces of a charged past.

In the group exhibition Beyond Walls some of the photographs I made in no man’s land between the border of Turkey and Bulgaria in the period of 2004-2007 are shown. Book publication of this work is to be expected in the fall of 2009.

The second International Photography Festival F/Stop takes place from the 16th to the 20th of July 2008 in Leipzig. During the festival I will be showing BABA under the group exhibition We are glad you're here. (Leipzig and International) Growing older, being old and the view of the young generation onto the old are subjects of matter in the exhibition "We are glad, you’re here." In opposition to the widely held belief that being old is only accompanied by physical handicaps and lingering illness this show is the indication towards positive aspects and influences the generation of grandparents holds for all following generations. Strength, experience, fights for life and survival, delight and success, desire and luck of older people are being displayed from the grandchildren's point of view. This show is the effort to carefully speak out about precious characters and relations as a form of gratitude. Both, the exhibitions as well as the accompanying events take place at the "Spinnerei" (the building used to house a spinning company) and along the neighbouring Karl-Heine-Straße in the Leipzig district of Plagwitz. www.f-stop-leipzig.de
